Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “MADE IN NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S. OF AMERICA / -WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL-” – “WINCHESTER / -TRADE MARK-” – “MODEL 12 – 20 GA. – 2 3/4 CHAM. / FULL”. The top of the barrel to the left of the rib at the rear and the top of the receiver at the front are marked with ovalled “WP” proofs. The bottom of the barrel extension at the rear and the receiver at the front are each marked with the serial number. The receiver and the sides of the barrel up to the magazine tube bracket have deep relief foliate scroll engraving with punch-dot fill and pheasant scenes on the sides of the receiver with the animals done in sculpted silver and the scenes bordered with a silver band.
Barrel Length: 28 1/2” to the end of the Poly-Choke, approximately 26″ to the end of the barrel, Solid Rib
Choke: This shotgun has an adjustable Poly-Choke installed.
Sights / Optics: There is a brass bead in a base at the rear of the Poly-Choke. The top of the rib and receiver are serrated to reduce glare.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece walnut with a grooved slide handle which swells slightly toward the middle, checkered pistol grip, straight comb and ventilated orange rubber Comet recoil pad. The stocks have a few scattered light scuffs, compressions and handling marks. The checkering is well defiend. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 14 1/8” from the front of the trigger to the back of the pad, 13″ to the back of the wood. The pad has hardened slightly showing scattered wear with cracking and some tiny losses at the heel and toe, in about Good  condition. The stocks are in about Very Good-Fine overall condition as refinished and possibly not original to the gun.

Finish Originality: Refinished at the time of engraving.
Bore Condition: The bore is bright. There is no erosion.
Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 96% of its metal finish. The balance is in minor wear from operation and disassembly with only a few other minor marks, some under the finish. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun is in about Fine-plus condition as refinished.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a cross-bolt safety at the front of the trigger guard. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Model 1912 (shortened to Model 12 in 1919) was the next step from the Winchester Model 1897 hammer-fired shotgun, which in turn had evolved from the earlier Winchester Model 1893 shotgun. The Model 12 was designed by Winchester engineer T.C. Johnson, and was based in part on the M1893/97 design by John M. Browning, in that it used a sliding forearm or “pump action” to cycle the mechanism. It became one of the most popular shotguns of the 20th century with more than two milliion sold in a number of configurations, used by sportsmen, law enforcement and the U.S. Military alike. This example is a 20 Gauge produced in 1958 which has been customized with a Poly-Choke and extensive beautiful engraving with sculpted silver animal scenes on the sides. This would make a great display or addition to a Winchester collection but would also make a fine Skeet or hunting shotgun if you’re looking for something with a little more style than a more modern Remington or Mossberg.
