Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON” and the right side is marked “38 S.&W. SPECIAL CTG.”. The yoke cut is marked “79K4479 / MOD. 14-4”. The right of the frame is marked with the four-line Marcas Registradas address. The sideplate has an S&W logo. The crane and the sides of the grip frame have inspection marks. The butt is marked “79K4479”.
Barrel Length: 8 3/8″, Pinned
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a patridge blade integral to a serrated, ramped base pinned to the barrel’s wide, serrated rib with the rear face painted white. The rear sight is a S&W micrometer click adjustable square-notch.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece checkered Goncalo Alves panels with speedloader relief and S&W medallions. The grips have some light marks on the bottom faces, a few minor compressions and the left panel has a mark in the checkering at the grip screw escutcheon. The checkering is sharp. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in about Fine condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 95% of its metal finish. The barrel has some scattered minor marks and scuffs with a more notable nick on the bottom about 2″ behind the muzzle. The frame has some extremely light freckling on the front face of the yoke, the front and bottom of the trigger guard. The cylinder has a thin, faint turn-line. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in about Very Good-Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The double action trigger is smooth. The single action is crisp. The cylinder lockup produces very little play on all six chambers. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: For anyone looking for a quality target revolver the gun just about sells itself. When it comes to revolvers Smith & Wessons of this era have never disappointed and this is certainly no exception. Smith & Wesson weren’t just bragging when they called this model the “Target Masterpiece”, the 8 3/8″ pinned barrel, .500″ target hammer and trigger, adjustable sights and smooth action all promise to make this a tackdriver. This revolver is in more than good enough condition to add to a S&W collection and it would also make a fine revolver to pass down through the generations.
