Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is one-piece checkered walnut with pistol grip, Monte Carlo comb, and a checkered steel buttplate. There are sling swivels mounted on the underside of the forend and in the belly near the butt to which the sling is attached. The stock has many scattered light compressions, scuffs, drag lines and handling marks with some thinning finish at the bottom edge of the grip. The checkering is well defined with light handling wear and a few spots where the checkers are lightly compressed. There are no chips or cracks. The wood is generally slightly proud to the metal. The LOP measures 13 1/2” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has a few nicks around the edges and at the heel and is mostly worn to white in the smooth borders and on the points of the well defined checkering, with strong finish inside the checkering, in about Very Good condition. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is a little bit of very light erosion near the muzzle.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 85% of its metal finish. The finish is thining at all edges. The barrel has some residue from electrical tape which was wrapped around it and scattered freckling which has been scrubbed out. The receiver has some scattered light scuffing. The floorplate has a cluster of light scratches at the front-left and the trigger guard has a few light marks. The bolt body has light-moderate operational wear and the bolt knob has handling wear through the finish, appearing as a light gray color with some areas a brighter silver color. The screw heads range from sharp to lihgtly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the right side of the receiver. Pushed forwards, the safety is OFF. If pulled back all the way, it locks both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger, the detent for the half-way position catches better when being engaged from “SAFE”, with the detent feeling sort of squishy, not crisp when engaged from “FIRE”. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with a two-piece cardboard Winchester box with the serial number written on the label and an assortment of factory paperwork including instructions for a Model 70 rifle and for a Model 12 shotgun. The box has heavy wear with tape damage and reinforcement at tears, a portion missing at one corner of the lid, fraying and tears at corners and edges, and discoloration from age, in about Fair condition.

Our Assessment: This is a vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 rifle chambered in .257 Roberts and made in 1954. It is a Standard Rifle configuration with what appears to be its original box. The .257 Roberts cartridge is considered by some to be the best compromise between the flat trajectories of smaller diameter cartridges such as .22-250 and the power of larger diameter cartridges such as .30-06. The rifle is in Very Good condition with about 85% of its finish remaining, some very light erosion in an otherwise bright bore with sharp rifling. This is a beautiful rifle in a great hunting cartridge that is ready to bag some game or add to your Winchester collection. Please see our photos and good luck!
