Markings: The right side of the barrel shrouds are marked “DAN WESSON ARMS / .44 MAGNUM CTG.”. The right side of the frame is marked “DAN WESSON ARMS / MONSON, MASS. U.S.A. / SB013994”.

Barrel Length: 8″ & 6″ barrels, two ported, two not ported, with ventilated ribs and full under-lug shrouds

Sights / Optics: Each of the two barrel shrouds has a replaceable ramp front sight with a colored insert. Currently, both barrel shrouds have a red insert ramp installed. Included is a white inserts front sight. The rear sight is a square notch sight adjustable for windage and elevation, pinned to the topstrap.

Stock Configuration & Condition: Two grips are provided with this revolver. The installed grip is a one-piece large wood, square bottom target grip with beatiful grain, checkered, with Dan Wesson initial logo medallions on either side. This grip is in Excellent condition with only a couple of scattered light marks. There are no chips or cracks in the installed grip. Also included is an unmarked one-piece smooth walnut grip with finger grooves. This grip has a few scattered light marks with no chips or cracks, in about Excellent condition.

Bore Condition: All bores are bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion.

Overall Condition: This handgun set retains about 98% of its metal finish. The metal surfaces have only a few scattered light marks. Otherwise, there are only light handling marks. The hex-head screws are undamaged. The markings are clear. The pin heads are unmarred. Overall, the revolver set is in about Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The double action pull is smooth and the single action is light and crisp. The cylinder has very little play on all six chambers. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This pistol comes with a brown hard case with a label which correctly describes the gun including hand-written serial number, yellow padded interior, one wrench which has all three hex wrenches needed for disassembly as well as the wrench for removal and replacement of the barrels, rubber covers for all hex heads on the wrench, 0.006″ cylinder-gap feeler guage, barrels, sights and grips as described, a Dan Wesson patch and a Dan Wesson belt buckle. All accessories are in about Excellent condition. The case has a few light scuffs on the exterior, a couple of oil spots and light wear from the contents on the plush interior, in about Fine-plus condition.

Our Assessment: This is a Dan Wesson Model 744-VH with replaceable barrels and grips, which was a revolutionary concept from Dan Wesson. Not since the original open-top percussion revolvers from Colt was it so easy for the user to change the barrel on a revolver. This package allows for conversion of the same revolver into a 2.5″ compact, concealed carry piece to an 8″ target revolver, stopping at 4″ and 6″ along the way as you choose, though this listing includes on 6″ and 8″ barrels, ported and un-ported. You’ll also have your choice of sight inserts with red and white included in this listing and others available after-market. The extra grip should help fit any preference and other alternatives are available for this frame. Though not as popular as some other manufacturers, Dan Wesson earned a reputation, which continues to this day, of fine quality craftsmanship and innovative design.
