Markings: left side of the slide is marked “COLT PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.” / PAT’D AUG.25,1896. APR.20,1897. DEC.22,1903. JAN.25,1910. JULY 31,1913” and at the rear with a Rampant Colt logo. The right side of the slide is marked “COLT AUTOMATIC / CALIBRE 25”.”. The left side of the frame is marked “348227”. The left front of the trigger guard is marked with a “VP” in a triangle and “3” and the right front with “74”.

Barrel Length: 2 1/8”

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a tiny blade that sits in the bottom of the “U” groove that runs the length of the slide. The rear sight is a tiny square notch in the back of the groove.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are mother of pearl panels with Colt medallions. The left panel appears to have a thin crack at the medallion but the grips otherwise do not have any notable wear or damage. Overall, the grips are in about Very Good condition.

Type of Finish: Nickel

Finish Originality: The finish is original.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore.

Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 97% of its metal finish. The finish has scattered light scrapes and scuffs, but not through the finish. There is a small spot of surface oxidation on the right at the front edge of the grip panel and the trigger, grip safety and barrel show operational wear. The grip screw is tool marked with a strong slot. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in about Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly and the slide is tight to the frame. This pistol has a slide locking safety and a grip safety as well as the magazine disconnect added after 1917. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This pistol comes with a single six round magazine and a black cardboard box. The magazine is nickel finished and the floorplate is marked “CAL. 25 / COLT”. The magazine shows minimal wear, in about Fine-plus condition. The box has wear at edges and corners with discoloration from age and oil on the interior, in about Good-plus condition.

Our Assessment: From Wikipedia: “The Model 1908 Vest Pocket is a compact, hammerless, striker-fired, semi-automatic single action pistol. Manufactured by the Colt’s Manufacturing Company from 1908 to 1948, it was marketed as a small concealable firearm, which could be easily tucked into a gentleman’s vest pocket for unobtrusive carry. Created by famed firearms designer John Moses Browning, the Model 1908 followed Browning’s earlier European version, the FN Model 1906”. This pistol has is in about Fine condition with about 97% of its original metal finish remaining. The bore is bright, the rifling is sharp and there is no erosion in the bore. This is a cute little pistol that can be carried just about anywhere, and is perfect for concealed carry. It is also in great condition for its age and comes with a period box, which will likely get the Colt collectors interested. Please see our photos and good luck!
