Markings: The left side of the top barrel is marked “BROWNING ARMS COMPANY MORGAN, UTAH / MADE IN JAPAN/MIROKU” and the left side of the monobloc is marked “INVECTOR / PLUS / 28″“, “44” and “03970”. There are a series of inspection marks between the locking lugs (please see photos.) The right side of the upper barrel is marked “CITORI SPECIAL STEEL 12 GA – 2 3/4″”. The inside of the forend iron is marked “03970” and the inside of the forend has “BA 3970” pressed into the wood. Both sides of the receiver are marked with the Browning BuckMark and “XS Skeet” in gold. The top tang is marked “03970MT131” and the underside of the trigger guard also has the BuckMark in gold.

Barrel Length: 28” Ported, Vent Rib

Choke: Both Barrels are threaded for Browning Invector Plus Chokes. Currently, both have Skeet chokes installed. Also included are Improved Cylinder and Modfied Browning chokes as well as Full, Modified, Improved Cylinder and two Cylinder extended Wright’s Competition Choke Tubes.

Sights / Optics: A Hi-Viz front sight is mounted to the front of the rib with a green fiber optic installed, there is a small white mid-bead.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are checkered walnut with a beavertail forend, pistol grip with a slight palm swell on the right side, straight and a black solid rubber Browning recoil pad. The forend has a few scattered light compressions and handling marks. The buttstock also has a few scattered light compressions and handling marks with some marring along the bottom edge of the grip. The checkering is mostly sharp. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 14 1/2” from the front of the trigger to the back of the recoil pad. The stock is slightly cast off. The LOP is adjustable by moving the trigger forward or rearward, it is currently just forward of center. Drop at comb is approximately 1 3/4″, drop at heel is approximately 1 3/4″. The stocks rate in about Very Good-plus overall condition.

Type of Finish: The barrels are blue, the receiver and trigger guard are silver nitride with gold accents.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bores are bright. There is no erosion.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 97% of its metal finish. The barrel has only light handling marks and some light marks on the bottom of the barrel lugs, visible in the bottom of the receiver. The right shoulder of the receiver has some very light oxidation. The pin heads are unmarred. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun is in about Fine-plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The ejectors throw shells energetically. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This shotgun comes with a black cardboard Browning box with serial matching label, a Browning accessory box with chamber locks, replacement triggers, replacement sight inserts and hex wrench and three choke cases with a choke wrench and the additional chokes. The box has light scattered wear, in about Very Good-Fine condition. The accessories are in Excellent condition.

Our Assessment: This Browning XS Skeet is no longer offered by the factory, though there are still some XS series guns offered on a limited basis. This is a Skeet gun from the ground up, and needs to find a home with an active Skeet shooter looking for a 12 gauge. If that’s you, then this is a great looking gun that should perform every bit as well as it looks. With its ventilated top rib, ventilated side ribs between the barrels, porting, removable chokes and interchangeable trigger adjustable for length of pull this over/under is waiting for you to return it to the Skeet fields where it belongs.
