Markings: The receiver heel is marked “US RIFLE M1A / SPRINGFIELD / ARMORY / 098841”. The receiver & trigger group have been bedded to the rifle to improve the accuracy of the rifle. For that reason we are not able to disassemble the rifle and list its markings. See the optics section for the scope markings.

Barrel Length: Approximately 22 inches; 25 to the end of the removable muzzle break.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a bladed post set between 2 protective wings. The right sight wing of the National Match front sight is marked “NM 072”. The rear sight is a fully adjustable aperture. The face of the aperture’s riser is marked “NM”. The windage knob is marked “LEFT arrow” twice and “WRIGHT”. The elevation knob is marked “2 4 6 8 10 11”, “M” and “WC E”.

The rifle has a Springfield Armory 3rd Generation scope base attached. It is marked “SPRINGFIELD ARMORY / Geneseo, Illinois”. The mount is aluminum and is topped with rail that is slotted on the ends. Two screws attach the mount to the left side of the receiver. The screws have oversized heads. The screw heads and left side of the base show some light scrapes. The mount is in about Fine Plus condition. 2 unmarked scope rings hold the scope to the mount. The rings are secured by 2 screws on the left side. The screws have oversized heads for quick release. The rings are in about Excellent condition.

The rifle is topped with a 4-14X56, 1st Generation, Springfield Government Model Scope. The top rear of the scope is marked with the Springfield Armory “crossed cannons” logo and “SPRINGFIELD ARMORY / GOVERNMENT MODEL / 4x14x56 / US PATENT D306173 / JAPAN”. The power ring is marked “4 6 . . . 10 12 14”. The glass appears clear, the power ring functions, the target knobs turn and the rear focus ring functions. The level in the scope works (two lines, fluid and a bubble visible at the bottom of the view). The reticle is proprietary and consists of cross hairs, several small numbers and lines to determine distance and hold. It is difficult to explain here, but discussions on the topic are available on-line. The scope tube shows a few light scuffs. The scope is in about Excellent condition. The scope has two flip up lens covers attached that are marked with the Butler Creek logo. They show various light scrapes & handling marks and are in about Very Good Plus condition.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The gloss finished laminate stock has a pistol grip, metal nosecaps, a through bolt, 2 sling loops and a metal buttplate. The checkered metal butt plate rotates up to reveal a second checkered buttplate underneath it. The second buttplate has a trapdoor covering two holes in the stock for storage of cleaning equipment. The wood shows a few light scrapes & light handling marks. The LOP measures 13 1/4 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Excellent overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore shines. The rifling is sharp & deep. There is no erosion.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. The metal shows scuffs, light handling marks & a few small light scrapes. The screw heads are intact. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with a scope assembly; see above. It also comes with 7 .308 magazines. The 2 blue 20 round magazines are unmarked. They show various small scrapes & scratches and are in about Very Good Plus condition. The black plastic 20 round magazine is marked “THERMOLD” and with Patent & company info. It shows various scuffs & scrapes. It is in about Fine condition. The 2 parkerized 10 round magazines show light scrapes & scuffs. They are in about Fine condition. The parkerized 5 round magazine shows scuffs, light scrapes & light thinning. It is in about Very Good Plus condition. The blue 5 round magazine is marked “USA / MAGAZINES / INC” inside of an “American flag”. It shows light scuffs & handling marks. It is in about Fine condition.

Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory M1A was made in 1996. It is the civilian version of an M14. It is set in a beautiful gloss finished laminate stock that is bedded to the action & trigger assembly. The bedding should increase the rifle’s accuracy. The rifle’s scope assembly is consists of a 3rd Generation Springfield Armory mount and a 4-14×56, 1st Generation Springfield Armory Government Model Scope. The rifle & scope assembly are in GREAT shape. They have obviously spent most of their lives inside of someone’s safe. This package should make for one accurate .308. To top it off the rifle comes with 7 magazines; three 20 round mags, two 10 round mags and two 5 round mags. Good luck.
