There are also two small compression marks in the serrations of the barrel rib just in front of the rear sight and a small light mark near the bottom of the front strap. The cylinder has a very light drag line that never breaks the finish, but there are a few tiny compression marks between the bolt stop cuts where the bolt has hit the cylinder. The checkering/knurling is all sharp. The screws are sharp, except for the trigger screw and the windage adjustment screw on the rear sight, which are distressed. The markings are clear. Overall, this revolver rates in about Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The cylinder lockup on this revolver is SOLID, with no play whatsoever. The double action trigger is VERY smooth and the single action trigger breaks cleanly and lightly. The action functions correctly. We did not fire this revolver.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: Included with this revolver is a copy of an advertisement from the King Gun Sight Company dated December 1936. The ad is entitled “Colt-King and S. & W.-King Super Target Revolvers and shows a picture of a Colt 6” revolver with the Colt-King sight attached. It is billed as the “World’s Finest Pistol and Revolver Sight”.
Our Assessment: The Colt Officer’s Model Special was made for competitive shooters (please note the barrel is marked “Colt Officer’s Model 38 Heavy Barrel” and not “Special”). The hand-honed action of these revolvers helped shooters win many championships and they are generally known to be one of the finest target revolvers ever manufactured. The action on this revolver is certainly no exception and rivals that of the Colt Python for smoothness. In addition to its 6” heavy barrel, this revolver has a Colt-King Super Target vent rib mounted on the barrel and top strap with a Patridge front sight and micrometer click adjustable rear sight. It even has a mirror set into the rib to focus light on the rear of the front sight. This revolver is in Excellent condition with about 98% of its original finish remaining. It has some thinning on the front edges of the barrel and frame and a few small marks in the finish. The grips show oil staining and light wear in the checkering. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and the action is as solid as the day it left the factory. This is a truly outstanding revolver, so please see our pictures. No Colt revolver collection would ever be complete without a Colt Officer’s Model with a Colt-King Super Target sight, and we would bet it is going to be a very long time before anyone finds another for sale in such great condition. This is one of the nicest Pre war Kings Conversion officer’s model we have ever seen.
