Markings: The left side of the barrels are marked “COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY .357 MAGNUM”. The left side of the frames are marked “PAT. SEPT. 19, 1871 / JULY 2, 72 JAN. 19, 75” and with a Rampant Colt. The top of the barrels are marked “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.” The underside of the frames are marked with the revolver’s respective serial numbers. The left sides of the trigger guards are marked with the Triangle “VP” proof. The rear of the SAA #64 trigger guard is marked “D” & the rear of the SAA #74 trigger guard is marked “K”. The right side of both trigger guards are marked “Z”. The front face of the SAA #64 cylinder is marked “5564” & the front face of the SAA #74 cylinder is marked “3374”.

Barrel Length: 4 5/8” Round

Sights / Optics: The front sights are blades with a round front face and vertical rear face fixed to the barrels. The rear sights are “U” notches milled into the top straps.

Stock Configuration & Condition: SAA #64: The one piece Paul Persinger grip sports a rattle snake on the right panel and exhibits handling marks on the butt of the left panel. The grip is in Fine to Excellent condition. SAA #74: The one piece Paul Persinger” grip sports a rattle snake on the right panel and exhibits handling marks on the butt of the left panel and the edges of the right panel. The grips rate in about Fine overall condition.

Type of Finish: Nickel

Finish Originality: All Original

Bore Condition: The bores are bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in either of the bores.

Overall Condition: SAA #64: This handgun retains about 90% of its metal finish. Holster wear is visible at the muzzle, the left side of the frame and left recoil shield. The right side of the barrel and ejector rod housing display scattered small compression marks. Two significant marks from the ejector rod tab are present on the underside of the barrel along with a cluster of scratches in the finish near the frame. The frame, back strap and trigger guard show handling marks and marks in the finish are visible on the loading gate. Surface thinning is visible on the leading edge of the cylinder, with handling marks present on the sides and surface loss in the locking slots. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in about Very Good to Fine condition. SAA #74: This handgun retains about 92% of its metal finish. Holster wear is visible at the muzzle, the left side of the frame and left recoil shield. Two marks from the ejector rod tab are present on the underside of the barrel along with a cluster of scratches in the finish at the mid-way point. The frame, back strap and trigger guard show handling marks and a small cluster of tool marks in the finish are visible at the hammer screw head. Surface thinning is visible on the leading edge of the cylinder, with handling marks present on the sides and shallow drag marks. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in about Fine condition.

Mechanics: Both actions function correctly and have tight cylinder lockups. The actions are very smooth and were slicked up by Tom Sargis at Bozeman Trail Arms. We did not fire these handguns.

Our Assessment: A slicked up, ready to shoot pair of Colt Single Action Army revolvers doesn’t come around very often and this is an especially nice pair. They look great with original nickel finish and Paul Persinger (see books.google.com/books?isbn=0873499530) grips adorned with a spectacular rattlesnake design. They are very smooth, with action jobs performed by Tom Sargis at Bozeman Trail Arms (http://www.bozemantrailarms.com) If you have read John Taffin or Mike Venturino, you have probably read about the work of these two fine Single Action Army artists. A brace of fine authentic Colt Single Action Army revolvers like these will improve your looks and your Cowboy Action shooting game.
