Markings: The frame is beautifully engraved, with scrolls and animal scenes. “Grand European” is marked in cursive on the underside of the frame and the top of the barrel rib. The serial number is under the lever. The right side of the upper barrel is marked “MADE IN JAPAN”. The left side of the barrel is marked “WINCHESTER Grand European – XTR – 9.3x74R /9.3x74R / East Alton IL, U.S.A.” The inside of the forearm metal and wood are both marked with the serial number. The serial number is on the underside of the barrels between the lugs and there are Winchester Proof marks on both barrels, on the left side of the chambers.
Barrel Length: 23 ½”
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a brass beaded blade, on a tall ramp base and the rear sight is a flip-up notch sight, also dovetailed into the rib. There is a Leupold 1.5x4x VARI-X III scope included for mounting on an interesting pair of detachable scope rings and bases. The bases attach to the rib without any metal work and the scope comes off cleverly with the “joystick” on the right side of the front base. The crosshairs are fine duplex, the lenses are clear and the exterior of the scope is free of wear.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are beautifully checkered and figured pieces of varnished wood. The forend metal and grip cap are beautifully engraved steel to match the frame. There is a cheek piece on the left side of the stock. There is a tiny bit of wear on the belly of the stock and the edges of the cheek piece. The checkering is sharp and any wear is light. The LOP measures 13 ¾” from the front of the trigger to the back of the thick Winchester recoil pad. The stocks rate in about Excellent overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp with just a bit of fouling present. There is no erosion.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 99% of its metal finish. There is literally no mentionable wear to the finish and only a light mark or two evidencing assembly and disassembly. We would guess that less than 10 rounds have ever been fired through this rifle. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are crisp. Overall, this rifle rates in about Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, smoothly and is very tight. We have not fired this rifle.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This double rifle comes in its original box, with compartments for the barrel/forearm, stock/frame and scope. The box is sound with matching end label and rates in Fine condition with the inserts.
Our Assessment: For literally centuries, hunters have combed this planet in search of trophy game and the great ones did it with a double rifle. Whether on the plains of Africa, or high in the Rockies, there is no more refined, reliable or proven rifle to make your hunting companion than an O/U double rifle. Add the name Winchester to any rifle and it is immediately worthy, here is no exception. The caliber will limit the size of the game you hunt, but the rifle will limit nothing else and certainly the optics are up to any task you and the rifle are up for. The rest is up to you.
