Markings: The frame is beautifully engraved, with scrolls and animal scenes. “Grand European” is marked in cursive on the underside of the frame and the top of the barrel rib. The serial number is under the lever. The right side of the upper barrel is marked “MADE IN JAPAN”. The left side of the barrel is marked “WINCHESTER Grand European – XTR – 270 WIN. / 270 WIN. / East Alton IL, U.S.A.” The inside of the forearm metal and wood are both marked with the serial number. The serial number is on the underside of the barrels between the lugs and there are Winchester Proof marks on both barrels, on the left side of the chambers.
Barrel Length: 23 ½”
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a brass beaded blade, on a tall ramp base and the rear sight is a flip up notch sight, also dovetailed into the rib. There are scope bases mounted to the rib without any metal work, and the scope would come off cleverly with the “joystick” on the right side of the front base.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are beautifully checkered and figured pieces of varnished wood. The forend metal and grip cap are beautifully engraved steel to match the frame. There is a cheek piece on the left side of the stock. There is a tiny bit of wear on the belly of the stock and behind the lower tang. The checkering is sharp and any wear is light. The LOP measures 13 3/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the thin Winchester recoil pad. The stocks rate in about Excellent overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 99% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows what appears to be a slight scratch on the sides of the barrel rib between the scope bases, though this is just the seam and not actual wear. There is some light surface marking on the underside of the frame, none of these are worthy of calling scratches. There is truly no other external wear and just a bit of thinning on the barrels from the forearm (cannot be seen assembled). We would guess that less than 10 rounds have ever been fired through this rifle. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are crisp. Overall, this rifle rates in about Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, smoothly and is very tight. We have not fired this rifle.

Our Assessment: For literally centuries, hunters have combed this planet in search of trophy game and the great ones did it with a double rifle. Whether on the plains of Africa, or high in the Rockies, there is no more refined, reliable or proven rifle to make your hunting companion than an O/U double rifle. Add the name Winchester to any rifle and it is immediately worthy, here is no exception. The caliber will limit the size of the game you hunt, but the rifle will limit nothing else. The rest is up to you.
