Barrel Length: 28″

Choke: Modified

Sights / Optics: This shotgun is mounted with a full length Simmons Rib, with a bead at the muzzle.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are strikingly beautiful English walnut, checkered and with deep oil finish. There is a tiny crack at the left rear of the upper tang, and a depression. Perhaps the gun was dropped here. This was a field piece – not a show piece and there are very scattered marks and dings as evidence. The most notable ding is at the right side of the butt. The LOP measures 13 5/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the checkered wood stock/plate. The stocks rate in about Fine overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: The bore is bright. There is no erosion.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 90% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows a scuff on the top radius of the frame, above the ejection port. There are scattered marks and dings on the barrel and rib from rack storage. The frame flats do show evidence of metal prep and slightly rounded corners, but the refinish was very good and the metal apparently equally good to start. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear, though a bit rounded. Overall, this shotgun rates in about Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this shotgun.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 42 is a diminutive version of the venerable Model 12. It is a favorite of some skeet shooters and bird hunters alike. This gun has been redone, but redone with much taste and elegance. This shotgun is really in good shape for an 80 year old shotgun and would be great to have for next year’s dove season. Take advantage of this opportunity, bid early and often.
