Markings: The top of the barrel is marked “Shiloh-Sharps Model 1874”, “Shiloh Sharps tm”, and “Calibre 40 / 2 5/8”. The tang is marked “B2256”. The left side of the receiver is marked “Shiloh Rifle Mfg. Co. / Big Timber, Montana”.
Barrel Length: The half round (13/16”) half octagon barrel is 32”.
Sights / Optics: This rifle is mounted with a globe bubble level front sight adjustable for windage and dovetailed into the barrel. The sight has provision for interchangeable inserts and has a small circle insert installed. The rear sight is a tall (3 ½” elevation adjustment range) long range Sharps style sight mounted to the tang. There is no provision for windage adjustment on this sight, and there is no dovetail for a rear barrel sight.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two piece dark walnut with extra fancy grain. The pistol grip and forend are checkered, and there is a case hardened checkered shotgun buttplate. The forend features a pewter tip. The finish and checkering appear unblemished. The LOP measures 14 ¼” to the back of the buttplate. The stocks rate in about Excellent overall condition.
Type of Finish: The barrel is blue and the receiver, lever and hammer are color case hardened. The screws are polished blue.
Finish Originality: All Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp and deep. There is no erosion.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. There are very few marks from wear, storage or handling. Though this rifle has not been shot much. The rear sight shows frosting on the rear face of the eyepiece and the serrations on the eyepiece. The knurling on the elevation adjustment knob shows brown patina in the grooves. The screw heads are undamaged. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Excellent and near new condition.
Mechanics: This rifle has a single trigger with a light, crisp pull. The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle..
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: Globe and Tang long range sights are provided. The rifle comes in a plain cardboard box in a sleeve. The cardboard box is marked “Shiloh / Fragile”. It has clear tape all along one edge and on the ends where it once secured the box inside. It is marked with a marking pen with the serial number, store name, and sight and stock configuration. There is a large tear along one end, but the corners and edges are undamaged. The box has clear tape in several places and the end panels have had tape applied and removed, leaving surface loss. The inside has cardboard folds which fit the contour of the rifle, and has a tear from the hammer.
Our Assessment: This rifle is BEAUTIFUL. The checkered stock and very colorful case hardening set off the polished blue barrel well. It is perfect for BPCS shooters, as the .40 bullet is thought to be more accurate at longer distances than the .45. You can also win some long range matches at your local cowboy club with this, plus win the envy of everyone who sees you shooting it. Its a Shiloh!
