Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece smooth walnut with finger-grooved semi-beavertail forend, straight comb, pistol grip with Marlin’s “S”-shape on the bottom, Marlin “bullseye” in the belly, and checkered black hard rubber Marlin buttplate. The stocks have handling wear with scattered light-moderate compressions, scuffs and scratches, the most notable on the bottom-right of the forend. There are some scattered areas of thinning finish. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/2” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has scattered light wear, mostly around the edges, with well defined checkering and lettering, in about Very Good-plus condition. The stocks rate in about Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Refinish

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright. There are a few small spots of minor erosion.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 93% of its current metal finish. The barrel and magazine tube have a few scattered light marks. The receiver has scattered minor scratches and scuffs. The lever and bolt show light operational wear. The magazine tube is retained by the forend cap and has about 1/16″ play front to rear. This does not appear to interfere with operation. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are legible but shallow with soft edges. Overall, this shotgun rates in about Good-plus condition (see Mechanics).

Mechanics: The rifle has a two-piece firing pin. The rear portion has a leaf spring which is intended to push it down, out of alignment with the front portion when the lever block is not in its up, locked position. This leaf spring is worn or broken, not reliably pushing the rear portion out of alignment with the front. Otherwise, the action functions correctly. The magazine tube will hold up to 5 shells plus one in the chamber, but currently has a wooden dowel installed which limits the capacity to two 2 1/2″ or three 2″ shells. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: The concept of a lever-action shotgun is not particularly new, it was use on one of the first repeating shotguns, the John Browning designed Winchester 1887. Like many of Marlin’s lever guns, they allowed the design to mature a little before bringing out a gun that was arguably better than Winchester’s offerings. The Model 410 was introduced in 1929 using essentially the same design as their Model 93 rifle. This incorporated nice features such as a quite simple design, easy disassembly for maintenance, and side-ejection. The 410 was able to hold six shells while still sitting right at six pounds, making for a nice gun to carry around looking for small game. It’s also turn a couple heads at the skeet range, if you really want to challenge yourself. Please see our photos and good luck!
