Markings: The left side of the barrel at the rear is marked “221 F B”, the bottom at the rear is marked “E79”. The left of the receiver is marked “E79” at the chamber ring and “Cooper Arms Model 21”. The bottom of the bolt handle is hand-marked “E79”. The inside of the stock is marked “E79” in black marker.

Barrel Length: 24″ Heavy Barrel With Recessed Crown

Sights / Optics: The top of the receiver is drilled and tapped with two-piece grooved bases and QD rings holding a Leupold Vari-X III 4.5-14x50mm scope with duplex reticle. The scope shows only light handling marks and the glass is clear, in about Excellent condition. There is no provision for iron sights.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece select walnut with beavertail forend, checkered capped pistol grip, straight comb and solid black rubber basketweave textured Pachmayr buttpad. The stock has a couple of light compressions on the left under the receiver, a few scattered very faint drag-lines and light handling marks. The checkering is sharp. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/2″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The pad shows little to no wear. Overall, the stock is in about Excellent condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright. The rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. The trigger guard has a few light marks and the bolt body shows very light operational wear. Otherwise, there are only light handling marks. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The trigger pull is light and crisp. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is a Model 21 single-shot bolt action rifle from Cooper Firearms of Montana. Cooper made their way into the rifle market producing high-quality rifles at “affordable” prices, though their quality means that affordable is in relation to rifles such as Blaser, Dakota and other high-end manufacturers. This example is a Varmint rifle with a 24″ heavy match-grade stainless steel barrel, beautiful select-walnut stock and a nice Leupold 4.5-14x scope. Developed from a shortened .222 Remington case, the .221 Fireball allows for a very high-velocity and accurate performance even from shorter barrels. The cartridge has a following in the handloading community, able to achieve similar performance to a .223 Remington with a shorter case and less propellant, and in the opinion of some with more consistent velocities. This is a gorgeous rifle in a neat caliber that will make short work of groundhogs, squirrels, and any other varmints you need to take care of. Please see our photos and good luck!
