The forend has a Purdey forend snap. There are two spots on each side of the wrist that appear to be dowels, and there appears to be a crack where the wood meets the receiver on the left side. There is also a gap between the stock and receiver on the left side. The stock shows a deep indentation on the right side at the front of the comb, another indentation at the back of the forend, and deep scratches plus sanding marks on the right side of the wrist just behind the receiver. The LOP measures 13 3/8” to the back of the buttpad. The stocks rate in about Very Good overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bores are bright. There is no erosion.
Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 90% of its metal finish. The barrels shows wear at the muzzle, and numerous handling marks on the sides and edges. The rear of the barrels show thinning where they meet the receiver. The bottom of the receiver, trigger guard, forend tip, opening lever and top and lower tangs are engraved with “F” grade engraving. The screw heads show slight disfigurement. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun rates in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this shotgun.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This shotgun comes in a fitted leather scabbard. The barrels and receiver fit in separate chamois socks within the case. The chamois socks are a little dirty and the barrel sock has a hole otherwise they are sound. The straps on the pouch and the hinge on the top are broken and missing. The leather of the leg-o-mutton case is in generally Good condition with a crack about the middle on the back, and shows surface damage with loose stitching on the bottom. The top leather has separated from the top cap and the stiching has rotted away. Please see our photos. The inside of the case is intact and protects the contents well. A little TLC and repair and you will have a functional case again. There is an outer pocket containing a wooden 2 piece cleaning rod. The case lid shows creases and finish loss but can be restored..
Our Assessment: This is a beautiful old shotgun found in its leg-o-mutton case, hark back 100 years to the glory days when we were proud of our firearms manufacturing heritage. This Remington side by side reeks of quality, from the exquisite wood to the metal fitting to the striking case hardening of the receiver, to the exceptional refined engraving, and the mirror bores, this is a heritage shotgun that will bring tears to your eyes. This shotgun has been preserved well largely due to its correct maintenance, chamois protecting socks and the now aged and deteriorating (but restorable) leg-o- mutton case. You will be hard pressed to find an early Remington SxS shotgun in this condition ever again. If you are a collector and need something to impress your buddies at the pigeon ring here is that rare once in a lifetime find for you!
